HEALTH & WELLNESS UPDATE

***

The new NCP coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days, how can one know if he/she is infected. By the time they have fever and/or cough and goes to the hospital, the lungs is usually 50 % Fibrosis and it’s too late!
Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning:
Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stuffiness or tightness, etc.,it proves there is no fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicating no infection.
In critical times, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.
SERIOUS EXCELLENT ADVICE by Japanese Doctors treating COVID-19 cases:
Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY. Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least. WHY?
Even if the virus gets into your mouth…drinking water or other liquids will WASH them down through your esophagus into the stomach. Once there in tummy…your stomach ACID will kill all the virus. If you don’t drink enough water more regularly….the virus can enter your windpipes and into the LUNGS. That’s very dangerous.

Please send and share.

Water & Nutrition

Getting enough water every day is important for your health. Healthy people meet their fluid needs by drinking when thirsty and drinking with meals. Most of your fluid needs are met through the water and beverages you drink. However, you can get some fluids through the foods that you eat. For example, broth soups and foods with high water content such as celery, tomatoes, or melons can contribute to fluid intake.

Water helps your body:

  • Keep your temperature normal
  • Lubricate and cushion joints
  • Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues
  • Get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements

Your body needs more water when you are:

  • In hot climates
  • More physically active
  • Running a fever
  • Having diarrhea or vomiting

If you think you are not getting enough water, these tips may help:

  • Carry a water bottle for easy access when you are at work of running errands.
  • Freeze some freezer safe water bottles. Take one with you for ice-cold water all day long.
  • Choose water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. This can also help with weight management. Substituting water for one 20-ounce sugar sweetened soda will save you about 240 calories. For example, during the school day students should have access to drinking water, giving them a healthy alternative to sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • Choose water when eating out. Generally, you will save money and reduce calories.
  • Add a wedge of lime or lemon to your water. This can help improve the taste and help you drink more water than you usually do.

Show Me the Science – Why Wash Your Hands?

Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.

How germs get onto hands and make people sick

Feces (poop) from people or animals is an important source of germs like Salmonella, E. coli O157, and norovirus that cause diarrhea, and it can spread some respiratory infections like adenovirus and hand-foot-mouth disease. These kinds of germs can get onto hands after people use the toilet or change a diaper, but also in less obvious ways, like after handling raw meats that have invisible amounts of animal poop on them. A single gram of human feces—which is about the weight of a paper clip—can contain one trillion germs 1. Germs can also get onto hands if people touch any object that has germs on it because someone coughed or sneezed on it or was touched by some other contaminated object. When these germs get onto hands and are not washed off, they can be passed from person to person and make people sick.

Washing hands prevents illnesses and spread of infections to others

Handwashing with soap removes germs from hands. This helps prevent infections because:

  • People frequently touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into the body through the eyes, nose and mouth and make us sick.
  • Germs from unwashed hands can get into foods and drinks while people prepare or consume them. Germs can multiply in some types of foods or drinks, under certain conditions, and make people sick.
  • Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, like handrails, table tops, or toys, and then transferred to another person’s hands.
  • Removing germs through handwashing therefore helps prevent diarrhea and respiratory infections and may even help prevent skin and eye infections.

Teaching others about hand washing helps them and our global community stay healthy.

man in white long sleeve shirt sitting beside woman in pink long sleeve shirt

Handwashing education in the community:

  • Reduces the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 23-40% 236
  • Reduces diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58%  4
  • Reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21% 35
  • Reduces absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29-57% 7
Not washing hands harms children around the world

About 1.8 million children under the age of 5 die each year from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, the top two killers of young children around the
world 8.

  • Handwashing with soap could protect about 1 out of every 3 young children who get sick with diarrhea 23 and almost 1 out of 5 young children with respiratory infections like pneumonia 3, 5.
  • Although people around the world clean their hands with water, very few use soap to wash their hands. Washing hands with soap removes germs much more effectively 9.
  • Handwashing education and access to soap in schools can help improve attendance 10, 11, 12.
  • Good handwashing early in life may help improve child development in some settings 13.
  • Estimated global rates of handwashing after using the toilet are only 19%6.

Handwashing helps battle the rise in antibiotic resistance

coronavirus

Preventing sickness reduces the amount of antibiotics people use and the likelihood that antibiotic resistance will develop. Hand Washing can prevent about 30% of diarrhea-related sicknesses and about 20% of respiratory infections (e.g., colds) 25. Antibiotics often are prescribed unnecessarily for these health issues 14. Reducing the number of these infections by washing hands frequently helps prevent the overuse of antibiotics—the single most important factor leading to antibiotic resistance around the world. Handwashing can also prevent people from getting sick with germs that are already resistant to antibiotics and that can be difficult to treat.

Why is physical activity so important for health and wellbeing?

There are so many reasons why regular activity boosts your health. Read to learn what those are and how you can incorporate exercise into your day.

We know that staying active is one of the best ways to keep our bodies healthy. But did you know it can also improve your overall well-being and quality of life?

Here are just a few of the ways physical activity can help you feel better, look better and live better. Because, why not?

woman stretching

It’s a natural mood lifter.

Regular physical activity can relieve stress, anxiety, depression and anger. You know that “feel good sensation” you get after doing something physical? Think of it as a happy pill with no side effects! Most people notice they feel better over time as physical activity becomes a regular part of their lives.

It keeps you physically fit and able.

Without regular activity, your body slowly loses its strength, stamina and ability to function properly. It’s like the old saying: you don’t stop moving from growing old, you grow old from stopping moving. Exercise increases muscle strength, which in turn increases your ability to do other physical activities.

woman in black yoga pants and top doing yoga near window

It can help you live longer.

It’s true, 70 is the new 60… but only if you’re healthy. People who are physically active and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese. And the important part is that those extra years are generally healthier years! Staying active helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with aging. So active adults maintain their quality of life and independence longer as they age.

Here are some other benefits you may get with regular physical activity:

  • Helps you quit smoking and stay tobacco-free.
  • Boosts your energy level so you can get more done.
  • Helps you manage stress and tension.
  • Promotes a positive attitude and outlook.
  • Helps you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
  • Improves your self-image and self-confidence.
  • Provides fun ways to spend time with family, friends and pets.
  • Helps you spend more time outdoors or in your community.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies for the Flu and Cold

wooden ladle and chopping board with ginger during daytime

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian holistic health system, states that we must balance our diets to the season in order to prevent this dreaded springtime flu or cold. As the best-selling author of Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda and an Ayurvedic practitioner, these are my go-to home remedies for getting over the flu or cold holistically.

~Sahara Rose

1. Sip Hot Water Regularly

Take a sip of hot water every 20 minutes throughout the day. This will hydrate your dehydrated system and allow your body to flush out immunity compromising toxins, called ama in Ayurveda. Hot water balances Kapha and also loosens mucus membranes which are causing the congestion.

2. Drink CCF Tea

CCF tea is an acronym for cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds. When paired together, these three spices cleanse the body, enhance digestion and enhance immunity. Follow my simple CCF recipe below.

CCF Tea Recipe
Ingredients:

  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp coriander seeds
  • ½ tsp fennel seeds
  • 4 cups filtered water

Instructions:
In a small saucepan, combine seeds and water and bring to boil. Turn off heat and cover for 15 minutes or even overnight for a stronger brew.

Strain into a thermos and sip every 20 minutes throughout the day to keep your digestive system hydrated and your belly happy.

3. Try a Neti Pot

The neti pot has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda to flush out the nasal cavity, loosen mucus membranes, and remove toxins.

Here’s how to use a neti pot:

  • Combine 1 cup warm water+ ½ tsp of non-iodized salt in your neti pot or use a neti pot saline solution
  • Over a sink, place the tip of the neti pot into one of your nostrils
  • Turn your head at a 45 degree angle
  • Open your mouth wide and breathe only through your mouth as you pour the water into one nostril
  • Allow the water to move into the nostril and out the opposite nostril. This will pull away any mucus, bacteria, or viruses

Learn more about how to use a neti pot in my book, Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda

4. Oil Your Nasal Passage

After your neti pot, practice nasya, or oiling the nasal passage. Simply put some nasya oil on your pinky and lubricate your nostrils. This will prevent cracks and keep your nostrils hydrated. Many nasya oils contain herbs, such as neem, for further antibacterial benefits.

5. Gargle With Salt Water

Salt water helps kill the bacteria in the throat that causes illness. It also loosens excess mucus, and clears out the system. All you need to do is gargle ½ tsp sea salt in 1 cup warm water, 3 times a day.

An American Journal of Preventive Medicine study found that people who gargled three times daily saw nearly a 40 percent reduction in upper respiratory infections during cold and flu season.

6. Chew On Ginger

Chew on ginger with salt before meals. This helps stimulate your digestive enzymes, which enhances digestion and allows your body to remove toxins. Ginger also reduces Kapha, clearing out puffiness, mucus, and head colds.

7. Practice Pranayama Techniques

Practice pranayama to enhance breath. Simply breathing correctly can resolve many imbalances within the body. Most of us forget about our most basic healing tool – our breath, which is the most profound healing force we have.

8. Get Enough Sleep

Get to sleepS by 10 p.m. each night. Sleep is the only time your body has to recharge and heal itself. At 10 p.m., we enter the Pitta (fire) cycle of the day, and we get a second-wind of energy. By going to bed before 10 p.m., we can direct that energy towards our healing while we sleep.

Share with your family. Stay Healthy.. Remember to keep those families who have lost loved ones to virus & disease in your prayers ..

1st Things 1st: Know Ur Skin

Normal skin
‘Normal’ is a term widely used to refer to well-balanced skin. The scientific term for healthy skin is eudermic.

Normal skin has:

  • fine pores
  • good blood circulation
  • a velvety, soft and smooth texture
  • a fresh, rosy colour uniform transparency
  • no blemishes

Oily skin
‘Oily’ is used to describe a skin type with heightened sebum production. This over production is known as seborrhea.

Oily skin is characterised by:

  • enlarged, clearly visible pores
  • a glossy shine
  • thicker, pale skin: blood vessels may not be visible

Oily skin is prone to comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and to the varying forms of acne

Dry skin
‘Dry’ is used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum than normal skin. As a result of the lack of sebum, dry skin lacks the lipids that it needs to retain moisture and build a protective shield against external influences.

Dry skin
Mildly dry skin can feel tight, brittle and rough and look dull. Skin elasticity is also low.

Very dry skin
If the dryness is not treated, skin may develop:

  • mild scaling or flakiness in patches
  • a rough and blotchy appearance (sometimes it appears to be prematurely aged)
  • a feeling of tightness
  • possible itchiness

  • Every good skin care routine starts with a fresh slate—meaning washing your face should be a non-negotiable part of your beauty regimen, no matter the time of year.
  • Central heating and space heaters—you know, two winter necessities—can reduce
  • humidity and dry out your skin. Plus, taking long, hot showers—most likely one of your favorite cold weather activities—can also be drying to your skin.
  • According to the AAD, the best time to apply moisturizer is when your skin is still damp because this helps lock in hydration.
  • ‘Pores are not temperature-sensitive. Hot water can make the outer layers of skin swell, which makes pores look more “open”. but they don’t open and close based on temperature. When washing, water should be kept at a lukewarm temperature.’

Mental and physical stress cause increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This produces many of the harmful effects of stress, such as the release of inflammation-promoting chemicals called cytokines.

These effects can disrupt sleep, promote depression and anxiety, increase blood pressure and contribute to fatigue and cloudy thinking

Some forms of meditation can also lead to an improved self-image and more positive outlook on life.

Two studies of mindfulness meditation found decreased depression in over 4,600 adults

Dramatically reduced my breakouts

I’ve been trying organic skincare products for the past year (name brands, random finds, K-beauty) and this is the first one that I’ve ever written a review about. This cleanser, in addition to their moisturizer, has drastically reduced my breakouts, almost within the first 2 weeks. I have a very pale complexion (redhead) and this has lessened my inflammation and brightened the right areas. I 100% recommend the cleanser and moisturizer. I hope ya’ll create a face mask soon, I would love to try it!

Ayurvedic Healing

“As long as we are not living in harmony with nature and our constitution, we cannot expect ourselves to be really healed. Ayurveda gives us the means.”

―David Frawley

1EAyurveda, meaning “knowledge of life” made its debut in India 5,000-plus years ago and remains just as relevant to spa-goers today. At the center of this complex holistic medical system is the recognition and balancing of someone’s doshas (one of the three biological energies said to make up our mental and physical dispositions) through the integration of such disciplines as nutrition, exercise, meditation, massage, aromatherapy, and herbal medicine.

  • Preventive Care

So much of western medicine is focused on the treatment of disease. While western medicine struggles to catch up to the ancient wisdom of preventive care, Ayurvedic medicine has for thousands of years offered practitioners the means to maintain health and stave off disease.

By attuning our diets and lifestyles to our unique constitutions, we maintain the balance within ourselves that maintains good health. The best way to combat disease is to stay well in the first place.

  • Beautiful Skin

Healthy skin is beautiful skin. When we use the harsh chemicals found in so many commercial skin care products, we so mistreat our skin that we may feel compelled to the further use of harsh chemicals to help mask the damage done.

To care for our skin by first understanding our skin. Whether you have dry vata skin, sensitive pitta skin, or oily kapha skin, once you understand your skin type, you can find which ancient, natural skin treatments will best balances these qualities and promote healthy, beautiful skin. In addition, by following a healthy diet and a balancing lifestyle, our skin will respond to these Ayurvedic practices, and will naturally balance itself as the entire body is eased into greater balance and health.

  • Revitalizing Energy

It is so easy in this world to shirk sleep when working toward a deadline, to unmindfully eat foods out of season or even too late in the evening. We all do things that unbalance our bodies and minds, and this leads to sluggishness and lethargy.

Coffee and other stimulants might work in a pinch, in the short term, but Ayurveda has a comprehensive, long-term approach to revitalizing energy. When we understand our natural dosha, our constitution, we can determine how to balance ourselves. A vata person doing vata activity is overloaded with vata, and, could benefit from more elements of pitta and kahpa to balance this excess vata.
